HYLAND, Major General Frederick Gordon (1888–1962), CB, MC

Educated at Marlborough and RMA, Woolwich, Hyland was commissioned in the Royal Engineers in 1909. His First War service was in France, where he was five times mentioned in despatches and awarded the MC. Married in 1918, his wife died within a year.

A brevet major in 1919, Hyland married again in 1922 and attended the Staff College, Camberley, 1924–1925. An instructor at the School of Military Engineering, Chatham, 1926–1930, and Commander RE, Singapore, 1931–1934, he was Commander RE, 3rd Division, 1935–1936. Appointed to command 31st (North Midland) Anti-Aircraft Brigade in 1936, he was promoted major general and was GOC 6th Anti-Aircraft Division 1939–1941.

Responsible for Anti-Aircraft defences of London and the South-East, it is said that Hyland’s ‘kindly but firm character earned him the respect and affection of all under his command’ (Pile, 1949, 31). Appointed CB in 1942 and Chief of Staff and Deputy Commander of Gibraltar 1942–1944, he retired from the army in 1946. He died in a London nursing home.
